"Mayfair on Cavell is quiet,
comfortable and very well priced, with arguably Bernard and Matty
Ludeke dreamed of Motel Mayfair in 1967 when they bought the original
house at 17 - 19 Cavell Street West Hobart. The original house was built
approximately in 1888 and at one time was home to Hobart Lord Mayor
Robert Eccles Snowden. The property was somewhat run down having
previously been used as a guest house and neglected. The couple lovingly
restored the house and then added the motel units we see today a few
years later. The motel opened in around 1970 and has been operating as
such since. Bernard passed away in 1975 aged 69, but Matty continued to
run the motel until her retirement at the end of 2007, aged 84.
Bernard’s great-grandson, Michael Ludeke, took over as manager after
Matty’s retirement. |
